LeRoy Benjamin Fairbanks

LeRoy Benjamin Fairbanks, whose Ojibwe name is “Makoonce” which means “Little Bear”, 87 of Walker, MN died Monday, March 11, 2013 at Sanford Bemidji Medical Center.

Traditional Funeral Services will be 10:00 am Friday, March 15, 2013 at the Veteran’s Memorial Building in Cass Lake, MN with spiritual leader Melvin Eagle and Military honors by the Leech Lake Honor Guard. A wake will begin 6 pm Wednesday, March 13, 2013 at Veteran’s Memorial Building and will continue until the time of service on Friday. Interment will be at the Family Burial Grounds at his home on the hill near Walker. The Cease Family Funeral Home of Cass Lake assisted the family.

LeRoy was born July 30, 1925 in Cass Lake, MN, the son of Samuel and Isabelle (Standing Johnson) Fairbanks. He was raised and educated in Cass Lake. He proudly served our country for 25 ½ years in the U.S. Navy and participated in 3 wars, WW II, the Korean Conflict and Vietnam. He was honorably discharged, and then lived in Minneapolis and later moved to Leech Lake. He spent 30 years with his life partner Mary Anderson, they married in 2003.

He is survived by his wife: Mary Fairbanks of Walker, MN 2 Sons- Donald (Maxine) Fairbanks, Sr. and Dale Fairbanks 2 daughters- Dee Fairbanks and Erica (Toby) Fairbanks 3 stepchildren- Tony, Terri and Tina 10 grandchildren – LeRoy, Donald, Jr., Michael, Kari, Sarah, Benay, Jasmine and Erica’s 3 children 8 step grandchildren- Megan, Ashley, Erin, Katie, Kimberly, Emily, Jenna and Carmen and numerous great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents 2 brothers, 4 sisters and 2 grandchildren

Casketbearers will be LeRoy L. Fairbanks, Benay Fairbanks, Cedric Fairbanks, LeRoy A. Fairbanks III, Clinton Fairbanks, Brady Fairbanks, Robert Fairbanks and Chad Stangel. Honorary Casketbearers will be his military friends, helpers on the hill and extended family and friends.
