Marian J. Prentice

Marian J. Prentice, 82, of Redby. Born on June 21, 1930 to Julia Johnson-Needham and Joseph Needham. She began her journey to the spirit world on Friday, November 9, 2012.

A wake will begin on Sunday, November 11, 2012 at 3:00 P.M. and will continue until Tuesday, November 13, 2012 at The Redby Community Center.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Tuesday, November 13, 2012 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Red Lake with Father Pat Sullivan officiating.

Burial will be held at a later date.

Honorary Casket Bearers will be Ina Mae McNeal, Betty Beaulieu, Mona Needham, Geraldine Brun, Sandy King, Betty Schoenborn, Betty White, Darlene Needham, Florine Prentice and Esther (Ski) Hanson.

Active Casket Bearers: Roger White, Chad Prentice, Robert White, Charles Prentice Jr., Mike Roy and Charles Grolla.

Alternate Casket Bearers: Rodney Prentice Jr., Robert Needham Sr. and Albert “Whee” Charnoski Jr.

Marian resided on the Red Lake Indian reservation for the majority of her life. She attended and graduated from Marty Indian School in Marty, South Dakota and later graduated from Haskell University in Lawrence, Kansas. She returned to Red Lake where she married Paul Prentice on February 17, 1951. They were married for forty three years until his passing in 1994. She was employed at The University of Minnesota as Administrative Assistant, Red Lake Hospital as Administrative Assistant, Comprehensive Health as Human Resource Personel Director and then Red Lake Tribal Council as Human Resource Director until her retirement. She was also a board member for Healing Pathways, an active member in Wisdom Steps and an elder advocate for Native American Prevention conference.

Marian was know as “Granny” and loved to tell stories and laugh, even in difficult times she held the family together with her strength and humor. She took every opportunity to spend time with all of her family. She loved traveling places, going to the casino, watching her grandchildren laugh and play, dancing at pow wows and watching her favorite TV shows.

She is survived by daughters: Patricia (Don) Prentice, Della Prentice and Barb (Tom) Westbrook all of Redby, Minnesota; a sister: Elaine Nez of San Jose, California; a brother: Donald Needham Sr. of Red Lake, Minnesota; thirteen grandchildren; twenty eight great grandchildren and three great, great grandchildren;

Preceded in death by her parents, husband: Paul Prentice, a son: Charles Prentice Sr., sister and best friend: Patricia Needham, sisters: Dorothy and Barbara Needham, brothers: James, Marvin, Robert, Loren and Maynard Needham and by a grandson: Lee Charles Prentice.
