  • Gay and Lesbian High School Students Report 'Heartbreaking' Levels of Violence

    Aug 15, 2016

The first nationwide study to ask high school students about their sexuality found that gay, lesbian and bisexual teenagers were at far greater risk for depression, bullying and many types of violence than their straight peers. “I found the numbers heartbreaking,” said Dr. Jonathan Mermin, a senior official at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which includes a division that administered the survey. The survey documents what smaller studies have suggested for years, but it is significant because it is the first time the fed...

  • Gates Foundation to 'stay the course' as it seeks to help shape state education policies

    Aug 15, 2016

CHICAGO — Melinda Gates said she and her husband, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, learned an important lesson from the fierce pushback against the Common Core State Standards in recent years. Not that they made the wrong bet when they poured hundreds of millions of dollars into supporting the education standards, but that such a massive initiative will not be successful unless teachers and parents believe in it. “Community buy-in is huge,” Melinda Gates said in an interview here on Wednesday, adding that cultivating such support for big cultu...

  • Pushing back on Common Core criticism, an advocacy group promotes challenging student work

    Aug 15, 2016

A nonprofit organization that spurred a national effort to toughen teacher evaluations wants to redirect policy makers’ attention — toward too-easy student work. Seven years after releasing “The Widget Effect,” which argued that teachers weren’t being pushed to improve, TNTP has come out with “Room to Run,” a multimedia project that aims to answer the question, “What’s possible when students are challenged and inspired in school?” The project takes viewers into the classrooms of five students in four states whose teachers push them to ask qu...

  • Flailing States Must Look Abroad to Get Schools Back on Track, Says Report

    Aug 15, 2016

When it comes to improving schools, states have pretty much closed their eyes and dropped the ball. That's a primary conclusion of "No Time to Lose: How to Build a World-Class Education System State by State," a report released by the National Conference of State Legislatures on Tuesday. The report says that this failure on the part of states to create cohesive and strong schools has hamstrung the U.S., even as other countries produce better-educated students and workforces. "States have found little success. Recent reforms have underperformed...

  • CPS layoffs have hundreds of teachers looking for work

    Aug 15, 2016

The financial woes of the Chicago Public schools has provided the city’s principals with a deep pool of experienced applicants for teaching jobs. CPS last week sent layoff notices to 500 teachers as principals across the cash-strapped district cut their budgets for the 2015-16 school year. Another 500-plus non-teaching staff also were laid off. Social studies teacher Robert DiPrima carried a sheaf of resumes — and a heavy heart — to a CPS job fair at International Union of Operating Engineers Local 399 in the South Loop on Thursday. His talks...

  • Finding a teacher who inspires, understands and fully connects is not easy for minority high school students

    Aug 15, 2016

Growing up in New Rochelle in the suburbs of the New York City, John Burns saw his community as less diverse than divided. "You have a very rich north side, mostly white," Burns said, "and then on the south side you have the lower-income families, mostly minorities." This split carried over to the high school. Burns, 20, says that New Rochelle High School, his alma mater, might as well have been two different schools sharing a cafeteria and a football field. http://www.deseretnews.com/article/865659768/Finding-a-teacher-who-...
