    Liz Sawyer, Star Tribune|Jul 27, 2015

A federal appeals court on Thursday overruled U.S. District Judge John Tunheim and ordered a guilty verdict reinstated for a 40-year-old man from the Red Lake Indian Reservation accused of seriously injuring his 10-month-old son in 2013. • Medicare at 50-Still Flawed, After All These Years

    Jul 27, 2015

ST. PAUL, Minn.—This Thursday, Medicare will mark a milestone—50 years since it was signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson on July 30, 1965. Designed as part of LBJ’s “Great Society” initiative, Medicare was intended to provide low-cost hospitalization and medical insurance for the nation’s elderly. But the program has been in crisis for years and needs an escape plan, not a rescue plan, says Twila Brase, president and co-founder of Citizens’ Council for Health Freedom (CCHF, www.cchfreedom.org), a national organization dedicated to...

  • Anderson: Looking for walleyes? Try Leech Lake

    Jul 27, 2015

ON LEECH LAKE – A child of Mille Lacs, Steve Fellegy nonetheless was at home on this lake the other evening. A clear blue sky stretched from horizon to horizon and the slightest breeze riffled the lake’s surface. Nearby, a sailboat lay at anchor, while in another direction, wake-boarders went airborne. Others swam. Fellegy and I fished. Nomadic as they need to be, people have forever hustled to stay ahead of the game. Plains Indians chased the buffalo; woodsmen, new stands of pine; computer jocks, the next big thing. So it has been with Fel...

  • Brain waves help predict which kids will struggle with reading

    Jul 27, 2015

WASHINGTON – Research suggests it may be possible to predict which preschoolers will struggle to read — and it has to do with how the brain deciphers speech when it’s noisy. Scientists are looking for ways to tell, as young as possible, when children are at risk for later learning difficulties so they can get early interventions. There are some simple pre-reading assessments for preschoolers. But Northwestern University researchers went further and analyzed brain waves of children as young as 3. http://www.startribune.com/br...
