  • Mexico's Lopez Obrador on brink of historic presidential win

    Jul 2, 2018

MEXICO CITY — Leftist populist Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador was on the brink of a historic presidential win Sunday night as an exit poll gave him an overwhelming lead and both of his chief rivals conceded defeat. Lopez Obrador, who has vowed to transform Mexico and oust the "mafia of power" that rules the country, had a 16 to 26 point lead over his nearest rival, conservative Ricardo Anaya, and a slightly larger edge over Jose Antonio Meade of the ruling Institutional Revolutionary party, according to the survey by polling firm Consulta M...

  • DFL race for governor splits along regional lines

    Jul 2, 2018

A group of DFL lawmakers from greater Minnesota is alarmed by the prospect of running in November with the all-Twin Cities gubernatorial ticket of state Reps. Erin Murphy and Erin Maye Quade, their party-endorsed candidates. As Democrats increasingly lose their hold on political power outside Minnesota's largest cities, these DFL elected officials — most of whom served alongside Murphy and Maye Quade in the Legislature — worry that a growing metro bent could leave the DFL's rural constituencies increasingly endangered. http:...

    Jul 2, 2018

An incident last month in which Minneapolis police officers ordered three Oromo-American men out of their car at gunpoint after a white bar owner thought they might be armed has stirred racial tensions in the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood. But department officials said the officers involved were responding to a "credible report" about a person with a gun in a high-crime area, which necessitated a more aggressive response. http://www.startribune.com/police-response-to-cedar-riverside-gun-call-raises-racial-tensions/487073771/...
