MEXICO CITY — Leftist populist Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador was on the brink of a historic presidential win Sunday night as an exit poll gave him an overwhelming lead and both of his chief rivals conceded defeat. Lopez Obrador, who has vowed to transform Mexico and oust the "mafia of power" that rules the country, had a 16 to 26 point lead over his nearest rival, conservative Ricardo Anaya, and a slightly larger edge over Jose Antonio Meade of the ruling Institutional Revolutionary party, according to the survey by polling firm Consulta M...
A group of DFL lawmakers from greater Minnesota is alarmed by the prospect of running in November with the all-Twin Cities gubernatorial ticket of state Reps. Erin Murphy and Erin Maye Quade, their party-endorsed candidates. As Democrats increasingly lose their hold on political power outside Minnesota's largest cities, these DFL elected officials — most of whom served alongside Murphy and Maye Quade in the Legislature — worry that a growing metro bent could leave the DFL's rural constituencies increasingly endangered. http:...
An incident last month in which Minneapolis police officers ordered three Oromo-American men out of their car at gunpoint after a white bar owner thought they might be armed has stirred racial tensions in the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood. But department officials said the officers involved were responding to a "credible report" about a person with a gun in a high-crime area, which necessitated a more aggressive response. http://www.startribune.com/police-response-to-cedar-riverside-gun-call-raises-racial-tensions/487073771/...
ARLINGTON, TEXAS – Nothing changed on Sunday. Maya Moore kept scoring, the Lynx kept winning, and the team continued its mastery of the Dallas Wings. Moore scored 26 points on 10-for-20 shooting and the Lynx won their seventh consecutive game after grinding out a 76-72 victory over the Wings at College Park Center. http://www.startribune.com/lynx-survive-at-dallas-for-seventh-consecutive-victory/487067131/...
Ornamental goldfish that escaped or were released into a lake just south of the Twin Cities likely infected and killed off large numbers of carp, according to state conservation officials. A virus from the koi goldfish also has been found in at least eight other southern Minnesota lakes in the past year, the state Department of Natural Resources (DNR) said Friday. http://www.startribune.com/dnr-blames-large-fish-kill-near-twin-cities-on-illegal-release-of-ornamental-goldfish/487054121/...
Ronda Fox finally got the news last week, three months into planting season: The federal government approved her application to employ more than a dozen temporary foreign workers for her family-owned landscaping business in Aurora, Colo. She had hoped to have her crew in place by April 1, but had initially lost out in this year’s visa lottery. “Better late than never,” Fox said. http://www.startribune.com/unfilled-jobs-have-u-s-employers-vying-to-hire-foreign-laborers/486995261/...
WASHINGTON — Ready or not, change is coming to the House Democrats. Across the country, a new generation is making its way to Washington. It's not just that some of the Democrats, like 28-year-old Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, are young and progressive. They are. Or that many are women entering politics who want to fight President Donald Trump. They do. Or even that some of them live in Trump country. http://www.startribune.com/restless-democratic-newcomers-bringing-change-to-house/487050371/...

BEMIDJI -- The new children’s TV show airing on Lakeland PBS on Saturday has all the hallmarks of a typical kids’ program. Youngsters count to 20, practice saying animal names and recite nursery rhymes in the 26-minute pilot episode. BRAINERD, Minn. — "They said Hole-in-the-Day was like a big log in the road, too high to get over, too big to go around." Or so the Brainerd Dispatch reported Tuesday, Aug. 11, 1912, from the testimony of Kah-ke-gay-aush, then 73, of Big Bend. At the time, Kah-ke-gay-aush was recounting the assassination of Chief Hole-in-the-Day the Younger — one of the most prominent and recognizable faces of the Ojibwe people in Minnesota, gunned down and executed by a band of assassins in the road on June 27, 1868, near the current site of the Fis...

NEAR WRENSHALL, Minn. — One day after the proposed Enbridge Line 3 pipeline gained state approval at a hearing room in St. Paul, protesters gathered outside on a hazy Friday morning, June 29, in southern Carlton County. They stood on railroad tracks along the state line — the fenced and completed end of Enbridge Line 3 in Wisconsin over their shoulders and a pipeline easement into Minnesota overgrown with vegetation in front of them. http://www.bemidjipioneer.com/news/government-and-politics/4466989-enbridge-line-3-protester...
