  • 1 in 5 Teachers Unfamiliar With the Common-Core Standards for Writing

    Jun 28, 2016

If you haven't yet seen the excellent new package of stories about writing instruction in the common-core era by our Education Week Teacher team, you'll want to head there right away. And we're not saying President Barack Obama is likely to sign any of these bills. But according to...

    Jun 28, 2016

Supporters of a $15 minimum wage in Minneapolis say they’ll deliver 20,000 petition signatures to City Hall this week — and are confident they have the legal right to put the issue on the ballot this November. Organizers need 6,869 verified signatures to get the issue on the ballot. But they’ll also have to convince the City Council of two key legal points: that the city has the legal standing to raise wages on its own, and that it can be done by amending the city’s charter, which lays out the framework for how city government operate...

  • Stung by defeats, Democrats shift strategy on gun control

    Jun 28, 2016

Congressional Democrats increasingly frustrated by a string of defeats on gun issues in Washington are scrambling to harness a public outpouring after last week’s sit-in protest on the House floor. Party leaders are urging members to conduct similar sit-ins around the country as they try to sustain the flash of hard-core activism on the gun issue. “We don’t have the numbers to get things done, so we have to turn to more dramatic displays to galvanize the public so they can help us pressure the Republicans to do what’s right,” said U.S. Rep....
