  • Recycling stalling in U.S., and big blue bins are one reason

    Jun 22, 2015

ELKRIDGE, Md. – Once a profitable business for cities and private employers alike, recycling in recent years has become a money-sucking enterprise. The District of Columbia, Baltimore and many counties in between are contributing millions annually to prop up one of the nation’s busiest recycling facilities, tucked in the woods 30 miles north of Washington, but it is still losing money. In fact, almost every facility like it in the country is running in the red. And Waste Management and other recyclers say that more than 2,000 mun...

  • National Aboriginal Day Brings Hope for Results From Truth and Reconciliation Report

    Jun 22, 2015

As National Aboriginal Day dawns, Indigenous Peoples across Canada are wondering: Now that the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s (TRC) report with its barrage of 94 far-reaching recommendations has hit the street, will anything meaningful result? Or will this simply be a way for non-aboriginals to wash their hands of guilt and then get on with business as usual? It’s not hard to be skeptical; after all, white society has a long history of mercilessly trampling on Native rights. But as National Aboriginal Day approached, indigenous peo...

  • Domestic Abusers Have Gone Unpunished in Native American Country - Until Now

    Jun 22, 2015

There was nothing Michael Valenzuela could do about it. Nobody could, really. The victim was a tribal member living on the reservation and dating a non-Native man with an abusive streak as deep as it was vicious. Back in the 1990s Valenzuela was a rookie cop on the Pascua Yaqui reservation, just outside Tucson, Arizona; today he serves as the tribe's chief of police. With short curly hair and a soft, even voice, Valenzuela prefers talking about some of his personal interests — Wakavaki (a traditional Pascua Yaqui soup) or Star Wars (his o...

  • Federal Court Stops Utah from Prosecuting Crimes on Ute Reservation in Case Filed in 1975

    Jun 22, 2015

Utah prosecutors who for years wouldn’t take no for an answer have been slapped down again by a federal appeals court that ruled the state can’t prosecute Native Americans for crimes on tribal lands. The battle between the Ute Indian Tribe and Utah state and county prosecutors goes back to a 1975 case. It was ruled then that only tribal courts and the federal government may prosecute tribal members for crimes committed on reservations. State and county prosecutors have tried on several occasions in the intervening years to usurp that aut...

    Jun 22, 2015
