It’s fish kill season in Minnesota (and yes, that is different than fishing). All around the state, hundreds of dead fish are washing up to the shorelines of small lakes, including about 10 lakes in the east metro. But officials aren’t concerned. https://www.twincities.com/2018/05/16/minnesota-winterkill-dead-fish-lakes/...

The Minnesota Senate has voted 35-32 to pass a bill that would kick-start construction of Enbridge Energy’s proposed replacements of its aging Line 3 crude oil pipeline across northern Minnesota. The House passed the legislation Monday, but the Senate on Wednesday added a two-word amendment that the House must concur with before sending the bill to Gov. Mark Dayton, who has promised to veto it. https://www.twincities.com/2018/05/16/senate-approves-bill-to-bypass-puc-construct-northern-minnesota-oil-pipeline/...
Minnesota’s top election official on Wednesday publicly pleaded with lawmakers to give him permission to spend $1.5 million in federal funds to protect the state’s voter software from Russian hackers and anyone else trying to muck things up this election year. “I have tried to sound the alarm without being alarmist,” Secretary of State Steve Simon said Wednesday. “I am today again sounding the alarm. We need these funds.” https://www.twincities.com/2018/05/16/mn-elections-legislature-russian-hackers-voting/...

The percentage of U.S. K-12 students who are physically punished in schools continues to drop, but nearly 100,000 children were still spanked or paddled in school in 2015-16, and black students are still disproportionately on the receiving end of the practice. The overall number of students receiving physical discipline represents an 8 percent decline from 2013-14 when under 110,000 students were spanked or paddled. There's been no real change in the number of schools using physical discipline—about 4,000, mostly in the rural South—but the...
