  • Heavy storm damage in Crow Wing County

    Aug 5, 2016

BRAINERD, Minn. -- Another overnight thunderstorm hit north-central Minnesota early Thursday, knocking out power and even knocking over a Babe the Blue Ox. That is, “a” Babe the Blue Ox was knocked over; not “the” Babe the Blue Ox. The strong winds toppled the 6,000-pound statue of Babe at Paul Bunyan Land in Brainerd. It was lifted back on its feet later Thursday. The Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox statues in Bemidji are still standing strong at the Lake Bemidji waterfront, although some areas of Bemidji did lose power following the...

  • For ed-tech success, why schools use technology is just as important as how

    Aug 5, 2016

Many public school districts don’t have the resources to partner with an education technology company to develop customized digital learning tools for their classrooms. But when it comes to selecting ed-tech products or figuring out how to use them in the classroom, they could still learn something from the successful partnership between Leadership Public Schools (LPS), a charter network that serves the San Francisco Bay area, and Gooru, an ed-tech nonprofit. “Schools are often looking at instructional uses,” said Thomas Arnett, a...

  • Metro Transit, food vendors vow to improve after U.S. Bank Stadium opening

    Aug 5, 2016

The day after the first big event at U.S. Bank Stadium, the overriding complaint about how it went could be captured in one word: Lines. The longest ones — if a throng of people packed shoulder to shoulder can be called a line — formed on light-rail platforms outside the downtown Minneapolis stadium after Wednesday night’s sold-out professional soccer match, which drew 64,101 fans. Riders sweated out the long wait for a train on the steamy night, then shoved and crunched into rail cars. Metro Transit reported that the last fan left the...
