Hillary Clinton delivered plenty of applause lines Tuesday in a speech to the nation’s largest teachers union at a gathering in Washington, calling for less standardized testing, more support for vulnerable children and more respect and pay for public school educators. “I want to say, right at the outset, that I’m with you,” Clinton said to loud cheers from thousands of delegates to the National Education Association’s annual meeting. “If I am fortunate enough to be elected president, educators will have a partner in the White House, and...
Donald Trump’s political rise over the past 12 months has helped breed a culture of fear, bullying and harassment in the nation’s schools, Hillary Clinton charged Tuesday. Speaking to educators at the National Education Association’s annual conference in Washington, Mrs. Clinton said her Republican presidential opponent can’t be allowed to have any influence American schools. She also said the billionaire’s divisive rhetoric already has had a devastating effect on children. “Parents and educators are already worried about what they are calling...
School districts in the Washington area and across the country are adopting grading practices that make it more difficult for students to flunk classes, that give students opportunities to retake exams or turn in late work, and that discourage or prohibit teachers from giving out zeroes. The policies have stirred debates about the purpose of issuing academic grades and whether they should be used to punish, motivate or purely represent what students have learned in class. Some regard it as the latest in a line of ideas intended to keep...
U.S. schools have made great strides over the last two decades in improving student performance and behavior. According to new data from the U.S. Department of Education, 13 percent of all students -- more than 6 million in total -- missed at least 15 days of school in 2013-14. The repercussions of so many missed days are clear. Children chronically...
