Alcohol may have been a factor in a two-vehicle crash in Cass County that killed a 23-year-old woman about 6:30 p.m. Friday, police said. Dani Rebecca Detloff of Backus was driving her 2005 Ford Taurus east on 16th Street in Powers Township when she pulled out from the stop sign and was struck by a Ford F-150 that was traveling south on Highway 371. A battle between farmers and Minnesota regulators about highway ditch mowing will continue to simmer at the state Capitol. On one side of the mowing battle are farmers who say they are saving the state millions of dollars by mowing ditches for what they say is a relatively small amount of low-quality hay. Minnesota lawmakers debated a controversial bill Thursday that would require school districts to create and enforce policies requiring “academic balance” in their educators’ instruction. The proposal stems from controversy last fall in the Edina school district that resulted in the high school’s Young Conservatives Club filing a lawsuit alleging members’ free speech rights were violated. FROHN TOWNSHIP -- A Cass Lake man was found dead early Friday morning after a possible heroin overdose.
