  • House votes to avert federal shutdown, Senate chances dim

    Jan 19, 2018

WASHINGTON — A divided House on Thursday passed an eleventh-hour plan to keep the government running. But the GOP-written measure faced gloomy prospects in the Senate, and it remained unclear whether lawmakers would be able to find a way to keep federal offices open past a Friday night deadline. The House voted by a near party-line 230-197 vote to approve the legislation, which would keep agency doors open and hundreds of thousands of federal employees at work through Feb. 16. The measure is designed to give White House and congressional b...

  • Bemidji Pioneer: Former mayor Lehmann back on Bemidji council

    Jan 19, 2018

BEMIDJI -- After an interview process that lasted more than two hours with six candidates, the Bemidji City Council selected former Mayor Richard Lehmann to represent Ward 4 for the rest of the year. Lehmann, 59, will take over the seat that was vacated when Patrick Plemel resigned in late December to run a behavioral health facility in North Dakota. Because there was less than 364 days left in the term, the council by city charter had to appoint a successor rather than hold a special election. http://www.bemidjipioneer.com/...

  • More Than 90 Percent of Ed Dept. Staff Would Be Furloughed in Shutdown, Will Slow ESSA Plans, Hurt 'Impact Aid' Schools

    Jan 19, 2018

A collision of deadlines and politics has given rise to that most perfect, and increasingly frequent, of D.C. storms: the impending government shutdown. Current funding runs out Friday. After that, only government employees performing “essential government functions” — like the military or food inspectors — continue working. Very few employees in the Education Department, however, meet that essential standard, and that could throw a wrench into the works of some major K-12 programs. https://www.the74million.org/more-than-90-...

  • Rural Schools Often Ignored in Research and Policy Discussions

    Jan 19, 2018

The poverty, inequity, and isolation that students in rural schools must cope with are often overlooked in education research and policy discussions, according to a new report from the National School Board Association's Center for Public Education. The report argues that despite the fact that rural schools struggle with high and lows more commonly associated with urban schools—high rates of poverty, low literacy rates, and low college attendance rates among them—the needs of millions of students are often neglected. More than 9 million stu...

  • Baltimore Schools' Heating Crisis A 'Day Of Reckoning' For The City And State

    Jan 19, 2018

Baltimore public schools' heating crisis earlier this month was a "day of reckoning" for the system, the city, and the state said public schools CEO Sonja Santelises. The crisis, she said in an interview with WYPR Wednesday, exposed the truth that Baltimore city school buildings are less than functional. As many as 85 of public schools in the city suffered heating problems over the course of a week, leaving students needing to wear coats inside classrooms that hovered around 40 degrees inside. Santelises was responding to weeks of anger from...
